Compass helps you build a better internal developer experience and improves the daily lives of developers. It streamlines the process of building and operating software at scale, reduces toil, and drives greater creativity, collaboration, and productivity across the entire software engineering organisation.

Based on Atlassian’s own journey of scaling our technology and teams as well as similar numerous stories across our 125,000+ Jira Software customers, we decided to build Compass for the world which recently became Generally Available (GA) last month in October 2023.

As engineering organizations adopt cloud technologies and DevOps practices, software development is becoming more decentralized and complex. No single developer can keep ‘the system’ in their head and are often working across at least a few services, libraries, or even AI models for a given feature or incident. In order to help developers navigate this information sprawl and improve their experience day to day, we needed to create a new type of tool.

Atlassian Intelligence - your virtual teammate

During our annual TEAM event in April this year, we introduced Atlassian Intelligence, an AI-powered virtual assistant, that was available for early access by signing up for a waitlist. AI has been a game-changer in the software development lifecycle and has already added immense value to developers.

Now, with Atlassian Intelligence in Compass, we can radically improve how developers self-serve and build software across multiple repositories, APIs, teams, and other pieces of relevant information configured. Compass indexes all this additional information beyond the source code, allowing you to ask questions in natural language about any software component tracked in the catalog and get immediate answers.

This makes it extremely easy to connect information across any open toolchain and see information about those software components such as “who owns this service”, “who relies on this library”, “what was the latest deployment or feature flag change” and much more.
