Creating more flexibility in cloud

Hi all,

Update for November-December 2023:

Cloud-to-cloud migration now also supports copying team-managed projects in Jira Software from one site to another.

We have also launched an Open Beta for Confluence product data copy in Admin Hub. This is rolling out to all customers in Admin Hub.

Additionally, we have launched an Early Access program for Jira Service Management projects to be moved between cloud sites. This is made available to customers via sign-ups.

I’m happy to share that cloud-to-cloud migration for company-managed projects in Jira Software is now generally available, the first of many new copy product data features that will provide your teams with greater flexibility and control in the cloud.

As you build and grow your footprint in the cloud, copy product data can be crucial in ensuring that you have the tools you need to customize each site to the needs of each team. From consolidating sites to bringing teams together or spinning up new sites to create greater autonomy, copy product data gives you better flexibility and control to adapt your environment to whatever may come your way. Another scenario in which copy product data can be useful is when dealing with sensitive or confidential data that needs to be partitioned from the rest of your organization. The easy design of copy product data, allows you to move data over into a specific site and ensure that only folks that are read into the project have access to that information.

In addition to being easy to use, these new features have been optimized for reliability and visibility to ensure that data is moved over seamlessly. If whatever reason the data cannot be delivered to the destination site, we offer error reports that identify potential conflicts for you to resolve before you run your migration. Ready more about how to use the feature here: https://support.atlassian.com/migration/docs/cloud-to-cloud-migration/

If you previously used copy product data for Jira Software in EAP, thank you for being a part of bringing this feature to life! We are also running a Confluence data copy Early Access Program and would love to get your feedback.

Feel free to add your comments, questions, and suggestions below.

Happy copying!

@Swarna Mehta Great announcement and a useful addition to the administrators' toolbox!

Is there any documentation about the new tool too? I'm interested in how this tool is accessed: Admin Hub, Jira System Settings...?

I did find the documentation under Cloud-to-cloud migration | Atlassian Support :) However, I didn't delete my previous comment as I believe that such announcements should still come with the accompanying support documents, and you guys at Atlassian create very good documentation.

We have been using the beta for quite some time and it had many bugs so I'm curious about this.  I wrote in another community post:

"We use the cloud to cloud to migrate a customers project back to their instance. To get moving very quickly we start work on our instance and then at some point either during or at the project end will migrate this data to their side.

The migration tool is very buggy however and crashes, and also migrates A LOT of things which we don't need like all the users, all the groups, and all the custom fields regardless of whether they were used or part of the project. For this reason we use a test instance, to migrate into and if it doesnt crash, we then clean up that instance and then migrate to the client instance. Using the middle test instance also helps because the client is unlikely to grant us site-admin on their site in order to perform the migration."

So I really hope that these problems have been fixed because cleaning up after a migration takes longer than the migration!

@Kalin U Thanks for the feedback. I added the link to the support documentation in the announcement as well now.

This is great - the beta has worked fairly well for me.

It would be good to know when Jira Service Management project migration will be supported

@Steve Rhodes I remember your comment and we did take into consideration such experiences to improve the reliability of the tool. The current generally available offering aims to be stable with a high success rate of the data copy.

We understand that the data currently moves with a lot of other global entities that may not be relevant. This is because the way Jira is structured, it is likely for project data to break in the absence of the global context. That said, we are shipping a feature to scope users and groups to the project selection by the end of this calendar year which should help with easier and more contextual data movement.

Cheers, we look forward to your feedback as we keep improving the offering.

@Perry Tancredi Looking forward to you using the more reliable generally available offering too. We're working to add more product support like Jira Software team managed projects, Confluence and Jira Service management to Cloud to cloud data copy.

Jira service management projects are likely to be supported in the first half of 2024 currently. Will keep the community posted as we have more concrete dates!
